The official status of Kutaisi Polytechnic Institute was awarded on September 23, 1973 in Kutaisi and it was opened on September 1, 1974 . The first rector of the Institute was Nodar Valishvili. The Institute was named after the academician Niko Muskhelishvili in 1977. On September 21, 1992 Kutaisi N. Muskhelishvili Polytechnic Institute was granted university status and was called Kutaisi Niko Muskhelishvili State Technical University.
Pursuant to order #39 as of February 23, 2006 approved by the Georgian government, the legal entities of public law Kutiasi Akaki Tsereteli State University and Kutaisi N. Muskhelishvili State Technical University were united into one, the educational status being determined to be the university and was named Akaki Tsereteli State University.
Faculty of Technical Engineering in Akaki Tsereteli University was established in Kutaisi on the basis of the Faculty of Technical direction of Muskhelishvili State Technical University. For many years Kutaisi Polytechnic Institute and later Kutaisi Technical University has carried carry out academic and scientific work of many technical directions.
At the time of reorganization in Kutaisi Muskhelishvili State Technical University the core of engineering technical faculty was drawn up with the following units: Department of Applied Mechanics of Cybernetics Faculty; The faculty of the road; Faculty of Engineering Mechanics; Electro-technical faculty; Transportation Faculty. Experienced scientific-pedagogical staff of these units continue working in three Departments, such as : Construction and Transport; Mechanical-engineering technique; Electrical Engineering and Telecommunication.
