Kutaisi Faculty of Polytechnic Institute was granted an official status on September 23, 1973 and in 1974 Kutaisi Polytechnic Institute was opened, which was named after the Academician Niko Muskhelishvili in 1977. For the first time the chairs were opened by the Department of Electrotechnology, which were led by Dr. Sh. Maglakelidze, N. Chakvetadze, A. Khurtsilava, O. Zivzivadze.
The Department of Energy and Telecommunications is the legal successor of the Department of Electrical Engineering. On September 21, 1992, Kutaisi Muskhelishvili Polytechnic Institute was granted university status and was named after Niko Muskhelishvili State Technical University of Kutaisi.
From this year the department of the electrical engineering merged with hydraulics, electronics and automatics chairs and was created chair-department of electrical engineering and electrical energy.
Since 2006, legal entities of public law - Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University and Kutaisi N. Muskhelishvili State Technical University were united into one. The educational institution was named as Akaki Tsereteli State University.
Department of Electrical Engineering and Electricity has been transformed into Energy and Telecommunications Department since 2006, which has been leading by Professor Omar Zivzivadze since then. The Department combines 5 directions: Electricity, Telecommunications, Micro and Biomedicine Electronics, Criminalistics Technology and Technical Expertise, Energy Economics and Management. The department serves three levels of teaching: Bachelor's, Master's degree, Doctoral studies, as well as vocational program "Electrician".
1 professor, 8 associate professors and 3 assistant professors works in the department. The Department has close, business connections with the following organizations of energy sector: hydroelectric station, SEMEC, ENERGO-PRO Georgia, Electricity System Commercial Operator, Kutaisi Intervention Center, Company "New Networks" etc. Based on the memorandums and agreements concluded with these enterprises, student internships, training and production practices are carried out on relevant profile objects.
