Since February, 1933 Kutaisi Pedagogical Institute began functioning, where there was set up a department of physics-mathematics from the very first days (hereinafter – the Faculty). It included the sections of physics and mathematics, the head of which was appointed Doc. Andro Begiashvili, and the head of the Cathedra of Physics- Doc. Mikheil Kukavadze, he was substituted with Doc. Mathe Mirianashvili in September of the same year, simultaneously, the latter was the Head of the Department of Physics at Tbilisi State University. In 1936 the Cathedra of Physics was divided into two parts: theoretical physics, the head – M.Mirianashvili and experimental physics, the head – Doc. Leonide Khutsishvili. In 1941 the cathedras were united again and called Cathedra of Experimental and Theoretical Physics (Head- Leonide Khutsishvili). In 1946 the Cathedra of Theoretical Physics was separated again and its head became Doc. Vladimer Sulava, and the head of the Cathedra of General Physics was Doc. Mikeil Gobejishvili. Since 1955 only one cathedra of physics was functioning, which was headed by Doc. Vladimer Sulava until 1962. In 1962-65 the head of the cathedra was Sen. Teacher Ivliane Jafaridze, and in 1965-77 -Doc. Irodion Eremeishvili. In 1977-1986 the head of the cathedra was Prof. T. Efremidze and in 1986-97 the head of the cathedra was Prof. Gogi Satomaradze. In 1997-2000 – Prof. Zaal Gabrichidze, in 2000-2006 – Prof. Tornike Efremidze. In 2006, after merging with the Polytechnic Institute, the head of the unified Department of Physics was Assoc. Prof. Demur Tedoradze, and from 2010 the head of the Department has been Prof. David Nishnianidze. Besides the people mentioned above, the following professors worked at the Cathedra of Physics (hereinafter – the Department): Andria Benashvili, Mikheil Vashakidze, Guri Tvaltvadze, Razhden Khitsishvili, O. Chikvashvili; Docents: Shota Gotsiridze, Archil Dadunashvili, Giorgi Devadze, Guram Devidze, Rostom Zambakhidze, Mikheil Imnadze, Nodar Kutivadze, Ambrosi Svanadze, Ivane Toroshvili, Ardalion Purtskhvanidze, Giorgi Chitaia, Khusein Khalvashi, Revaz Jinjikhadze, Vladimer Jikia, Natela Kikabidze and others; Teachers: Tina Bukhaidze, Elene Kintsurashvili, Ruben Gvetadze, Alexander Siradze, Givi Churadze, Ioseb Khatridze, Rezo Jinjikhadze, Dimitri Samkharadze, Revaz Endeladze, Indiko Chelishvili and others.
The goal of the Department of Physics has always been preparing highly-qualified staff, for that the department is equipped with the relevant material-technical base and human resources. It should also be mentioned that the department has often invited famous scholars in order to deliver lectures or read reports, such as: Acad. Ilia Vekua, V. Foch, A. Petrov, Professors: M. Bashaleishvili, Sh. Bebiashvili, A. Ishkhneli, N. Kevelidze, V. Kobakhidze, A. Rukhadze, R. Jibuti, A. Ugulava and others.
